Getting Around the Dominican Republic

Getting to the Dominican Republic is easy from just about anywhere in the United States and Canada. There are several airlines that service the three main airports in a big way. Jet Blue, American, Delta and Continental to name a few. From the New York area it is only a three hours flight to get you to this incredible Caribbean paradise.

Within the last year, a new highway has opened from the south coast to the north, which is very close to, Santo Domingo Airport (SDQ), which has made this airport another option. It takes about 2 hrs from this airport to reach Cabrera.

Puerta Plata (POP) is the most commonly used to get to Cabrera. It is located just an hour and half away. Travelling from this airport to the Cabrera area is very easy: there is one main road for the entire route directly to Cabrera.

The third airport is Santiago (STI). Personally, this is our least favorite. The route to the Cabrera area is a mountain road, and while it is very pretty, it can be tricky driving.

Cathey (AZS) is a newly-constructed airport and is located just 20 minutes from the Cabrera area. However, at present there are no direct flights to this airport from the United States. It will be great when service from the U.S. begins … of course, if you have a plane or Jet, this is the closest airport.

You can arrange for a car and driver to pick you up at the airport of your choice or there are a number of international car rental agencies, i.e., Hertz, Alamo, at all airports.

While the driving is a bit trying on the nerves, you just need to pay attention to things going on around you. One of those things is the pot holes. In places particulary between the towns of Gaspar Hernandez and Rio San Juan ther are many and deep pot holes, so please drive slowly thru this area.

Another thought on this subject  of driving ,are the motorbikes, which every family has at least one. The Dominicans think nothing of putting 5 people on board. Many of the sites you will see on motorbikes are very unusual to us , but very common for them. Like the carryijng of propane tanks on the bank of thier scooters. There aren't many  people, kids and adluts alike, that wear helmets either. don't be alarmed by any of this, this is just thier way. However some drivers don't pay attention to basic rules of the road, like driving on the wrong side of the road, going down one ways the wrong way, and very few towns do eitht the motorscooter or cars pay attention to street lights. So please just stay alert and always be aware of your surroundings.

Please let us know if we can help you with any of your arrangements for a visit to the Dominical Republic and we will be happy to assist you with any of them.
